Hell is a hamlet of a few hundred people in Livingston County whose name, not its size, draws the cars. Downtown is three buildings on Patterson Lake Road: a general store and post office, an ice-cream parlour, and a bar. The real trip is the surrounding Pinckney State Recreation Area — lakes, trails and canoe launches — plus nearby Brighton and Ann Arbor. Plan a half-day stop, not a base.

Getting around

You need a car. Hell sits on county road D-32 (Patterson Lake Road), about 5 min southwest of Pinckney, reached from US-23 via MI-36 west to Pinckney, then Dexter-Pinckney Road and Patterson Lake Road. Downtown is walkable in minutes and parking by the store and parlour is free. No bus or rail serves the hamlet.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are rural driving — deer at dusk, winter ice on D-32 — and assuming the shops are open: hours are seasonal and short.
  • Seasonal businesses keep short, irregular hours: check the Go to Hell MI site before you drive out.
  • Cell coverage is fine but there is no taxi rank; arrange your ride back or keep your own car.
  • Rural roads ice over from December to March and deer cross at dusk.
  • October haunted-house nights bring heavy traffic on Pinckney Road; go early or skip the weekend.
