Northville

Go for one afternoon: a walkable Main Street, Mill Race Village and Maybury State Park. Sleep in Novi or Livonia and drive in.

Northville is a small city on the Wayne–Oakland county line, about 30–40 minutes by car from downtown Detroit. Its draw is a compact Victorian-era downtown of independent shops and restaurants, plus Mill Race Village, a cluster of moved historic buildings, and Maybury State Park next door. There is no rail station and few beds, so most visitors come for a half day and sleep in the surrounding suburbs.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: Maybury State Park's lot sits on 8 Mile Road between Beck and Napier, and downtown parking is limited on event days (check signs and time limits). Downtown itself is compact and walkable. Rideshare works for evenings; buses are limited, so check routes before relying on them.

Novi

More rooms and often lower weekend rates; drive time to Main Street check. See the Canton, Michigan guide.

Watch out

Safety

Low-crime suburban city; the real risks are winter driving, deer on rural roads at dusk and unattended bags in parked cars. 911 covers police, fire and ambulance.
  • Maybury State Park needs a Michigan recreation pass for vehicle entry: buy at the gate or online (check current price).
  • Downtown parking fills on summer festival weekends and during the November–December shopping season.
  • Winter sidewalks ice over; drive with care on 8 Mile Road and Haggerty Road.
  • Restaurant kitchens in town often close by 21:00–22:00: eat before 20:30.
