Rougemont
Go for one day in apple season (Sep–mid-Oct) or for a sugar-shack meal in spring; skip as a base — it is a village of about 2,700 with few beds.
Rougemont is a village on the south slope of Mont Rougemont in the Montérégie, about 55 km east of Montréal. It is Quebec's apple capital: orchards, cideries, vineyards and sugar shacks line rue Principale, rang de la Montagne and rang Double. Most visitors come for a half-day or a full day of U-pick and tastings, or for a maple meal in spring. Beds are few, so many travellers sleep in Marieville or Granby and drive in.

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: orchards are spread over several rang roads with no sidewalk and no village bus. Bicycles work on the flat stretches and on the 40 km Route des Champs path that passes through Marieville. LimoCar runs twice daily from Montréal's Gare d'autocars (about 1 h 5 min, $17.50).
