Saint-Jean-Baptiste is a small Richelieu valley village of about 6,000 people, 51 km east of Montréal by car. It is farmland with one main street, a heritage church, a big private campground and several farm gates selling duck, lamb, pork and berries. There is no rail station and no hotel strip: you come by car, you stay one night or you camp, and you use it as a quiet base for Mont-Saint-Hilaire and the Richelieu river villages.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights sit on rang roads 2–6 km apart with no useful bus. Routes 227 and 229 run either side of the Rivière des Hurons. From Montréal take Autoroute 10 east, cross the Richelieu and follow route 133 and then 227 north (about 51 km, 45–55 min). From Québec City it is about 220 km via Autoroute 20 and route 227 south. Inside the village you can walk rue Principale in 10 minutes.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are rural roads at night (deer, no lighting), winter ice, and ticks on Mont-Saint-Hilaire trails. 911 works everywhere; 811 for health advice.
  • No train or intercity bus stops in the village: without a car you are dependent on taxis from Beloeil or Mont-Saint-Hilaire.
  • Farm stands and pick-your-own are seasonal and often cash-first; check hours before driving out.
  • Campgrounds fill on summer weekends and holidays: reserve, do not arrive hoping.
  • Winter closes most farm gates and terraces; the village is quiet from November to April.
  • Sales tax is added at the till; posted prices in Québec are before tax.
