Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu is a small Richelieu River village of about 2,300 people, 63 km east of Montréal, known for its role in the 1837 Patriots' rebellion and for the Maison nationale des Patriotes. The village core is compact and walkable; most visitors come for two to three hours as a stop on the Route des Patriotes, or for the August market weekend. There is one inn and a handful of cafés, so treat it as a day stop rather than a base.

Getting around

The village core is walkable in 15 minutes. A car is needed for the marina (4.7 km south), the rang roads and the Route des Patriotes. The Handfield cable ferry crosses to Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu in about 5 minutes; in winter an ice bridge replaces it.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are the two-lane Route 133 with fast traffic, deer on the rang roads at dusk, and winter ice near the ferry crossing. 911 works everywhere.
  • Most restaurants and the Patriots house keep short, seasonal hours: check before you drive out.
  • The ferry runs Apr–Dec only and stops overnight; the winter ice bridge is weather-dependent.
  • No train or bus serves the village: without a car you are dependent on taxis from Chambly or Mont-Saint-Hilaire.
  • Cell coverage is fine in the village but patchy on the rang roads.
