Helmond

Give Helmond one night or a half-day: castle, cube houses and the canal. Base in Eindhoven (15 min by train) and come out for the afternoon.

Helmond is a former textile and metal town of about 91,000 people in North Brabant, 15 minutes by train from Eindhoven on the Eindhoven–Venlo line. Its draw is a small, walkable core: a 14th-century moated castle that now holds the town museum, a set of 1970s cube houses by Piet Blom, and a canal-side strip of bars and restaurants. It is a half-day or one-night stop, not a base — most travellers sleep in Eindhoven and ride out.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Benelux ↗Dutch and Belgian police can ask anyone to show identification (in the Netherlands from age 14): carry the original passport or EU ID card — a photocopy is not accepted.
  • Benelux ↗Tap-in fares, Dutch and Belgian domestic tickets and Luxembourg's free transport all stop at the border: buy an international ticket for cross-border legs, or you will be fined on board.
  • Netherlands ↗The Netherlands is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Dutch sources for your passport.
  • Netherlands ↗Red or marked bike lanes are for bikes: do not walk or stand in them, and look for cyclists before crossing.
  • Netherlands ↗Amsterdam has local rules on public drinking, cannabis use in some areas and short-term rentals; check the city's current rules and book licensed accommodation.
  • Netherlands ↗The Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and Keukenhof sell timed tickets online only or mostly; book before you arrive rather than queueing.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk: castle to Markt is about 5 minutes, Markt to the cube houses about 5 minutes. Helmond has four stations on the Eindhoven–Venlo line, but intercity trains stop only at Helmond station. City buses are thin — many lines have been cut — so plan on walking, cycling or a taxi for anything outside the core.

The practical base for this region: more beds, more food, direct trains onward.

's-Hertogenbosch

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Train via Eindhoven, about 50–60 min

Historic Brabant capital; a full day of old streets and the Sint-Jan cathedral.

De Groote Peel National Park

Car or taxi south on the N612/N266, about 30–40 min

Bog and heathland with bird hides; hard to reach without a car.

Car or train plus bus via Tilburg, about 1 h

Theme park day; buy dated tickets ahead.

Breda

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Train via Eindhoven, about 1 h

Another Brabant city with a strong old centre; better as its own stop.

Tilburg

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Train via Eindhoven, about 50 min

Fine for a half-day of museums and shopping; not a headline sight.

Geldrop

caution

Door to door: About 45 min

Train toward Eindhoven, then bus or bike, about 30 min

Small town and green surroundings; only if you are already nearby.

Bergen op Zoom

overnight

Door to door: About 1 h 45 min

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep there if you go.

Brandevoort

Quiet new-build district south of the centre; only worth it if you have a reason to be there.

Watch out

Safety

Helmond is a normal, safe Dutch town; the real risks are bike traffic, dark unlit paths along the canal at night, and the usual pickpocket caution in a busy Markt on a Saturday.
  • City buses are limited and many lines have been cancelled: check the operator's planner before relying on one.
  • Some Helmond museum and restaurant websites listed in older guides are dead links; confirm opening hours before you travel.
  • Canal-side terraces and bars are seasonal — many close or cut hours outside summer.
  • Sunday and Monday openings are limited for smaller museums and shops.
