Hapcheon is a rural county in northwestern South Gyeongsang, built around Haeinsa temple and Gayasan National Park. Haeinsa holds the Tripitaka Koreana woodblocks, a UNESCO World Heritage listing, and offers temple stays. The county is spread out, buses are infrequent, and a car solves most of the logistics. One night covers Haeinsa and the town market; two nights add Hwangmaesan or the film-set parks.

Getting around

No train station. Intercity buses reach Hapcheon Bus Station from Seoul Nambu (about 4 h), Daegu West (about 1 h) and Busan Western (about 2 h). Local village buses run but are infrequent. Taxis work in town. Renting a car is the easiest way to reach Haeinsa, Gayasan, Hwangmaesan and the dam. No bike or scooter rental.

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are rural roads without lighting, infrequent last buses, and summer heat with heavy rain in July–August.
  • Local buses to Haeinsa and the parks are few: check the day's timetable before you set out.
  • Haeinsa admission is free, but temple-stay places are limited and booked ahead.
  • July–August brings heavy rain: waterproof shoes and a raincoat.
  • Some parks and museums close one day a week (often Monday) and hours change by season: check before going.
  • English is limited outside the temple area; carry a translation app.
