Boardman

Stop for one night on an I-84 run, or skip: sights are thin, but the riverfront depot brewery and cheap beds break the drive.

Boardman is a small Columbia River town in Morrow County, split by Interstate 84 about 2.5 h east of Portland and 1.5 h west of Pendleton. It works as a cheap, quiet overnight on a long drive, not as a destination: a riverfront brewery in the 1916 train depot, a handful of motels, and easy access to the Columbia River and nearby wildlife areas. Most travellers pass through in an hour.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: I-84 splits the town and the exits are on either side. Everything in the centre is within a 10–15 min walk, but the riverfront, RV parks and wildlife areas need a vehicle. There is a bus stop in the town centre but no bus station; the Union Pacific line runs past town without passenger service.

River viewpoints and windsurfing country west of town.

Door to door: About 2.5 h

Historic main street and mountains; sleep there rather than doubling back.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Marine Drive and the riverfront

Hotels and the depot brewery by the Columbia; quietest, best for a river view.

Boardman Avenue and Front Street (town centre)

Motels, cafés and the bus stop; walkable, but I-84 traffic noise.

West Kunze Lane RV area

RV resort and campground west of town; best for rigs and tents.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet small town; the real risks are the drive (ice, dust, fatigue on I-84), summer heat and long gaps between services. Lock your car and keep fuel topped up.
  • Summer afternoons reach 32–35 °C (90–95 °F) with little shade; carry water.
  • Winter ice and blowing dust can close or slow I-84; check Oregon road conditions before driving.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on side roads toward the river and wildlife areas.
  • Most kitchens close by 20:00–21:00; eat before you check in.
