The Columbia River Plateau is dry sagebrush country in eastern Washington, cut by the Columbia and its coulees, with the Grand Coulee Dam, Hanford history, wine valleys and basalt cliffs spread 60–200 km apart. There is no rail spine and buses are thin, so a car is the practical way to see it. Sleep in one town — Tri-Cities for the widest choice, Yakima for the valley and I-90 access, Walla Walla for wine — and day-trip the rest.
