Boardman
Stop for one night on an I-84 run, or skip: sights are thin, but the riverfront depot brewery and cheap beds break the drive.
Boardman is a small Columbia River town in Morrow County, split by Interstate 84 about 2.5 h east of Portland and 1.5 h west of Pendleton. It works as a cheap, quiet overnight on a long drive, not as a destination: a riverfront brewery in the 1916 train depot, a handful of motels, and easy access to the Columbia River and nearby wildlife areas. Most travellers pass through in an hour.

Get around
A car is effectively required: I-84 splits the town and the exits are on either side. Everything in the centre is within a 10–15 min walk, but the riverfront, RV parks and wildlife areas need a vehicle. There is a bus stop in the town centre but no bus station; the Union Pacific line runs past town without passenger service.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer afternoons reach 32–35 °C with little shade; carry water.
- Winter ice and blowing dust can close or slow I-84; check Oregon road conditions before driving.
- Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on side roads toward the river and wildlife areas.
- Most kitchens close by 20:00–21:00; eat before you check in.
A quiet small town; the real risks are the drive (ice, dust, fatigue on I-84), summer heat and long gaps between services. Lock your car and keep fuel topped up.
