Harpers Ferry is a small West Virginia town of about 300 people where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet and three states touch. Almost everything visitors come for sits inside Harpers Ferry National Historical Park: the 1859 John Brown raid site, Civil War streets, and trailheads for the Appalachian Trail and the C&O Canal towpath. One day covers the park; a second day adds river time or a nearby battlefield.

Getting around

The park's free shuttle bus links the visitor center (paid parking) to Lower Town in season; walk Lower Town on foot. A car is needed for the surrounding area, river outfitters and Charles Town. Amtrak and MARC stop at the Harpers Ferry station on Potomac Street, a short walk from the historic district.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a small historic town; the real risks are river currents, slippery trail rocks and heat in summer. Keep to marked trails and check river levels before tubing or rafting.
  • Park at the visitor center and take the shuttle: Lower Town parking is extremely limited and fills early.
  • The park entrance fee is per vehicle or per person on foot or bicycle; keep the receipt for re-entry.
  • Trails along the rivers and the towpath flood after heavy rain: check conditions before hiking.
  • The John Brown raid is a sensitive topic locally; interpret it through the park's exhibits rather than casual remarks.
  • Cell service is patchy in the river gorge and on trails.
