Maryland packs an Atlantic beach, a bay, a colonial capital and Appalachian ridges into one state, but they sit 3–5 hours apart by car. Pick one half: Baltimore plus Annapolis and the Chesapeake for a first visit, or the Eastern Shore and Ocean City for a beach week, or Western Maryland for hiking and Civil War sites. Washington, D.C. is a 30–60 minute train ride away, so many travellers see Maryland's suburbs without noticing they crossed the line.
