Skip Aioi unless you need a quiet Shinkansen stop or are visiting the Kanjōsan Castle Ruins: half a day is enough.

Aioi is a small port city on the Sanyo Shinkansen line between Himeji and Okayama. Its main draw is the 13th-century Kanjōsan Castle Ruins, a Muromachi-period site on a hill. Most travellers pass through without stopping; the city works as a brief break on a longer journey or as a quiet base for exploring western Hyogo.

  • East Asia ↗Every border in East Asia is a full international border, Hong Kong and Macau included: an entry permission for one never covers the next.
  • East Asia ↗Ferries between Korea, Japan and China cancel in rough seas and typhoons; keep a flight or a spare day behind every sea leg.
  • Japan ↗IC cards (ICOCA/Suica) are topped up with cash at station machines.
  • Japan ↗Smoking while walking is banned in most city centres; use designated areas.
  • Japan ↗Shinkansen bags 160–250 cm (L+W+H) need a seat reserved with the oversized-baggage area.

Watch out

Safety

Aioi is a quiet, safe city. The main risk is the uphill walk to the castle ruins in summer heat.
  • Kanjōsan Castle Ruins are a hilltop site with no shelter: bring water and sun protection.
  • English information is limited; the tourist association has a guide map in English (check).
  • Restaurants close early; eat before 20:00 or bring food.
