Rules in force · 5Drug trafficking can carry the death penalty in Singapore…
- Southeast Asia ↗Drug trafficking can carry the death penalty in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Brunei and Myanmar; never carry a bag or parcel for anyone.
- Southeast Asia ↗Carry a passport valid for at least six months from entry with two blank pages; airlines refuse boarding on less.
- Malaysia ↗Most foreign visitors must submit the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online shortly before arrival; use only the official immigration site.
- Malaysia ↗Remove shoes before entering mosques, temples and homes; cover shoulders and knees, and use the robes on loan at major mosques.
- Malaysia ↗Cards and e-wallets are common in cities; keep some ringgit in small notes for hawker stalls, taxis and tolls.
Malaysia's second-largest city and the state capital of Johor, sitting directly across the Causeway from Singapore. Most visitors come for cheaper shopping, eating and spas, or use it as a stopover. The centre is small and walkable; the good malls and restaurants spread into the suburbs, so plan on ride-hailing rather than buses. One or two nights covers the city; add nights for Desaru, Mersing or Iskandar Puteri.

Arrive & move
Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in
Getting around
The centre is walkable, but sights and malls are spread out. Grab is cheap and the practical default; local buses exist (Maju, Causeway Link) but are slow and confusing for short visits. From JB Sentral, buses and the shuttle train cross to Singapore; the KTM shuttle to Woodlands is the fastest border option when it runs.
See & do
Day-trips, door to door

goDoor to door: About 45 min

Ferry gateway; time it with a morning crossing.
Door to door: 2–2.5 h
Bus or car northwest on the coastal road
Food town; doable as a long day or an overnight.
Door to door: 1.5–2 h
Bus or car north via the North–South Expressway

Which area to sleep in
Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
JB Sentral / City Square
Beside the CIQ checkpoint and the Causeway; walk to malls and food, best for one night with bags or a border crossing.
Danga Bay / Stulang
Waterfront hotels and seafood; quieter than the centre, so plan on ride-hailing.
Tebrau / Mount Austin
Suburban malls, cafés and nightlife; rooms are often cheaper than the centre but you need a car or Grab.
Iskandar Puteri (Nusajaya)
Legoland, Puteri Harbour and family resorts; a separate base west of the city.

- Afternoon thunderstorms are common year-round; carry a small umbrella.
- Agree taxi fares or use the meter; use Grab where possible.
- Singapore-registered cars need a VEP RFID tag and a ¾-full tank to leave Singapore.
