Malaysia's second-largest city and the state capital of Johor, sitting directly across the Causeway from Singapore. Most visitors come for cheaper shopping, eating and spas, or use it as a stopover. The centre is small and walkable; the good malls and restaurants spread into the suburbs, so plan on ride-hailing rather than buses. One or two nights covers the city; add nights for Desaru, Mersing or Iskandar Puteri.

Get around
The centre is walkable, but sights and malls are spread out. Grab is cheap and the practical default; local buses exist (Maju, Causeway Link) but are slow and confusing for short visits. From JB Sentral, buses and the shuttle train cross to Singapore; the KTM shuttle to Woodlands is the fastest border option when it runs.
