Elbasan
Pass through Elbasan on the Tirana–North Macedonia road, or give it half a day for the castle and a bugaçe breakfast; one night is enough.
Elbasan sits on the Shkumbin River where the Tirana–Pogradec–North Macedonia road crosses the old Via Egnatia. Almost every traveller between Tirana and Korçë or the Qafë-Thana border passes through, but few stop. The walled old town, a Roman castle footprint, a clock tower and a distinct breakfast culture are worth half a day to a night. It is not a base for the Riviera or the south; it is a stop, a day trip from Tirana, or a launch point for the Shpati hills and the Llixhat baths.

Getting around
The centre is walkable: castle, boulevard, clock tower and Ethnographic Museum are within 15 minutes on foot. Taxis wait by the main square. Local buses leave from the St. Bashkia stop (east of Elbasan Central Palace) and from the Tregu i rrobave terminal near the Cërrik junction. For Llixhat take the bus from St. Bashkia, 50 lek, about 12 km.
