- Caribbean ↗Several islands (Turks and Caicos above all, also the Bahamas and Jamaica) jail visitors for a single stray bullet or cartridge in their luggage; empty every bag and pocket before you pack.
- Caribbean ↗From August to October keep a free last day before your flight home and check the national hurricane centre daily; airports close when a named storm approaches.
- Caribbean ↗Wearing camouflage clothing is illegal for civilians in several islands, including Barbados, Antigua, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Grenada, Dominica, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica; leave it at home, children's clothes included.
- Sint Eustatius ↗Entry follows Dutch rules for the Caribbean Netherlands, which differ from Schengen rules: check official Dutch government sources for your passport.
- Sint Eustatius ↗The waters around the island are a national marine park: dive with licensed operators and follow park rules and fees.

Overview
The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.
Oranjestad is one very small town split into a hill (Upper Town) and a shore (Lower Town), with an airport a few minutes away and a dormant volcano at its edge. There is no public transport plan, so a guesthouse pickup, a hired car or a scooter joins the four areas. Weather and the small-plane connection through Sint Maarten decide whether the trip runs on time.

Understand
- 01Sint Eustatius, called Statia by everyone who lives there, is a small Dutch island in the Caribbean with about 3,000 people. Oranjestad is its only town, split into an Upper Town on the ridge and a Lower Town at the bay.
- 02In the 1700s Statia was one of the busiest free ports in the Atlantic, known as the Golden Rock. Ships from Europe, North America and the Caribbean traded here, and the ruins along the shore are what is left of that trade.
- 03Today the island is a special municipality of the Netherlands, with the US dollar as currency and English as the everyday language. It is quiet: a few guesthouses, a small dive industry, a marine park and a volcano to climb.
History you can still see
| When | What happened | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| c. 1636 | The Dutch settle Statia and start building Fort Oranje. | Fort Oranje — The fort on the cliff above the bay. |
| 1739 | The Honen Dalim synagogue is built by the island's Jewish community (check the exact year). | Honen Dalim synagogue ruins — Roofless walls and a tower in the Upper Town. |
| 18th century | Statia becomes a free port and warehouses line the Lower Town shore. | Lower Town warehouse ruins and old waterfront — Warehouse walls, some partly under the sea. |
| 1776 | On 16 November the fort answers the salute of a US Navy brig, one of the first foreign salutes to the new US flag. | Fort Oranje — The salute plaque at the fort; Statia Day marks it. |
| 1781 | British forces take the island and strip the merchants of their goods. | The empty warehouses and ruined churches. |
| 1863 | Slavery is abolished in the Dutch Caribbean. | The museum's displays on plantation and trade history. |
| 2010 | Statia becomes a special municipality of the Netherlands. | Dutch signs and services on a small island. |
More background
The island is about 21 square kilometres and shaped like a sleeping figure: The Quill volcano at the south end, a low plateau in the north and the town in the middle on the leeward coast. The leeward side has calm water and the dive sites. The windward side faces the Atlantic and is rough.
Most of the island's old buildings are ruins, not restored houses. That is part of the appeal: you can walk into a walled synagogue or along a warehouse wall without a ticket queue. It also means there is little to read on site, so a first stop at the museum helps.
Life is small-scale. Shops close early, many places close on Sunday, and a plane or boat that does not run can change your whole week. Plan slow days and keep the flight home comfortable.
Tourist information
- Check the tourist office or the island government site for the current list of guides, dive shops and the marine park fee.
- Guesthouses usually arrange airport pickups, hired cars and guides: ask when you book.
- Opening hours are short and not always posted: phone the day before for anything you must not miss.
Orientation & districts
Oranjestad is one small town in two levels. The Upper Town sits on the ridge with the fort, the museum and the ruined synagogue and church. The Lower Town is at sea level around Oranje Bay with the dive shops and the restaurants. A steep road links them, a 6–10 minute walk. Beyond town, The Quill is a short drive south and Zeelandia Beach a short drive north.

Good for…
Verdict is how well Oranjestad works for that traveller, not how nice it is.
First-timers
good fitSmall, safe and simple; flights and weather are the main risk.
- Fort Oranje — the easiest start.
- Oranjestad in 3 days — the 3-day plan already keeps a buffer.
Food trips
cautionSimple island food; few restaurants and short hours.
- Lower Town waterfront restaurants — fish and local plates by the sea.
- Set dinner at your guesthouse — a set dinner that is worth booking.
Tight budgets
worksFood and flights cost more than the mainland; guesthouses and picnics help.
- Supermarket and bakery picnic — cheapest meals.
- Free walks — the ruins and the fort cost nothing.
Couples
good fit- Sunset at the bay — the simplest good evening.
- The Quill — a shared morning.
Solo travellers
good fit- Dive-shop boat — an easy way to meet people.
- Historical Foundation museum — a rainy-day plan alone.
Families with kids
cautionFew child-centred sights; beach and ruins work for older kids.
- Oranje Bay beach — calm water near the shore.
- Fort Oranje — cannons and views.
Older travellers
cautionSteep lanes and rough paving; a car helps.
- Lower Town guesthouse — flatter than the ridge.
- Hired car — skip the hills.
Luxury
works- A private boat dive — the best time on the water.
Wheelchair users
hard workSteep, uneven and sandy; plan by car and check each site.
- Fort Oranje — a short ramp.

Working here
- Entry rules
- Statia is part of the Netherlands but has its own entry and residence rules: check before you fly.
- Work permit
- Non-residents need a permit to work (check with the island government).
- Remote work
- Internet is slower and less reliable than on the mainland: test before you rely on it.
- Volunteering
- Nature and heritage projects sometimes host volunteers; ask about permits first.

- Steep lanes and rough paving are hard for strollers: bring a carrier.
- Sun is strong: hats, shirts and shade every 60–90 minutes.
- Ask your guesthouse for child seats in taxis and hired cars; they may not be available.

Deep dive
History, reading, photos and every source
Deep dive
Sint Eustatius, known as Statia, is a small Dutch Caribbean island with one town, one volcano and a large share of Atlantic history. In the 1700s it was a free port and a warehouse for the Caribbean; today it is a quiet place for divers, hikers and history readers. This deep dive follows the island's story from the Golden Rock to the crater of The Quill, and ends with how to plan a stay.
1History: the Golden Rock2 min
Sint Eustatius is a volcanic island of about 21 square kilometres with roughly 3,000 residents, and for a few decades in the 1700s it was one of the busiest trading ports in the Atlantic. The Dutch settled it in the 1630s, and over the following century it changed hands many times between the Dutch, English and French. What made it valuable was not sugar, although plantations existed, but its status as a free port. Ships of any nation could land goods, pay low or no duties and leave, and that neutral position in a century of wars made the island a warehouse for the whole Caribbean.
Merchants, many of them Dutch, Jewish and British, built a long line of warehouses along the shore, and the settlement was said to hold thousands of people and forests of masts at anchor. Guns and gunpowder passed through the port to the American colonies, and that connection produced the event the island is best known for. On 16 November 1776 the American brig Andrew Doria entered the bay flying the flag of the rebelling colonies, and the fort fired a salute in reply. It is often described as the first foreign recognition of the new United States, though historians debate how official it was. A plaque at Fort Oranje tells the story.
The island paid for that role. In February 1781 a British fleet under Admiral Rodney captured Statia, seized the warehouses and the goods in them, and shipped out an enormous quantity of merchandise. The French took the island a year later and returned it to the Dutch in 1784, but the trade had gone and the port never recovered. Warehouses fell into the sea, the Upper Town emptied, and the settlement shrank into the quiet place it is today.
The trade also rested on slavery. Enslaved people were sold through the island, and they worked on its plantations and in its warehouses. Slavery in the Dutch Caribbean ended in 1863. The Historical Foundation museum treats this part of the story directly, and it is worth reading before you look at the ruins so that you see what they were built with.
Since 2010 Sint Eustatius has been a special municipality of the Netherlands, with US dollars as the currency and Dutch, English and a local English-based speech in daily use. Statia Day on 16 November marks the 1776 salute. For a visitor, the practical point is that the history is the main attraction: it is all within a short walk, it is mostly free, and it is quiet enough to read properly.

- A special municipality of the Netherlands since 2010; currency is the US dollar
2The Lower Town and the Sea2 min
The Lower Town is where the trade came ashore, and it is the best place on the island to understand why anyone bothered. A single shore road runs along Oranje Bay, and the ruins of old warehouse walls stand along it and in the water. Some stand a metre or two out in the shallows, where the shoreline has moved back since the 1700s. The cliff behind them carries the fort and the Upper Town, so the two halves of the settlement look at each other across a short, steep slope.
Walking the shore road takes about half an hour and is easy: it is flat and open, but it has almost no shade. Late afternoon is the best time, when the low light warms the stone and the heat has eased. The ruins are protected and unstable. Look from the road or the sand, and do not climb the walls; hurricanes and storm swell have already taken a lot of them.
The Lower Town is also the working part of the island today. Dive shops, a small harbour and a few restaurants share the same stretch, and it is where boats leave for the marine park. The Statia Marine Park protects the reefs and wrecks around the island, and divers come for the wreck and anchor sites, which are close to shore and often quiet. A one-tank dive costs about US$60–90 (2026 estimate, plus a park fee, check). Snorkellers can use the calmer sites; ask a dive shop which ones are safe on the day.
Do not treat the shore as a general swimming beach. Currents, swell and the occasional ship movement are real, and the bottom drops off quickly in places. Ask your host or a dive shop where and when swimming is sensible, and go with a partner. Oranje Bay beach is the usual answer for a calm dip, but check first.
Evenings are simple. A few small restaurants and your guesthouse are the choices, and several close on Sunday and Monday or shorten hours in the low season. Phone in the afternoon, carry US cash, and book your ride home before you sit down: the climb back up to the Upper Town is steep and poorly lit. If your guesthouse cooks dinner, that removes the problem, so ask at check-in and order by midday.
Nights are dark and quiet. If you stay on the shore, you will hear the water more than any traffic. A small torch is useful for the walk back, and a taxi arranged in advance is worth the few dollars.
- Length of the ruins walk
- About 30 to 45 minutes along a flat shore road
- Best light
- Late afternoon
- One-tank dive
- About US$60–90 (2026 estimate, plus park fee, check)
- Swimming
- Ask a dive shop or your host; do not swim off the shore road alone
3The Upper Town and Its Ruins2 min
The Upper Town sits on the cliff above the bay and holds most of what is left of the old settlement: Fort Oranje, the Honen Dalim synagogue ruins, the ruins of the Dutch Reformed Church, the Historical Foundation museum and most of the guesthouses. It is small enough to see in a morning. The lanes are short and steep, the paving is uneven, and there is little shade, so start early and carry water.
Fort Oranje is the first stop for most visitors. It stands on the edge of the cliff with cannons pointed at the bay, a courtyard and a view over the Lower Town to neighbouring islands. The salute of 1776 is recorded on a plaque here. It is free as far as we can tell and there are no posted hours, so treat it as a daylight visit, most reliable in the morning on a weekday.
The Honen Dalim synagogue is a short walk away. It was built about 1739, and what stands is a set of roofless walls, a tower and some architectural details, set among grass. In the 1700s the Jewish community was a large share of the island's merchants, and this was its centre. The building was abandoned after the events of 1781. Reading the information board or asking at the museum will help you picture the interior; the ruin itself takes about 15 to 20 minutes.
The Historical Foundation museum is in an 18th-century house nearby, and it is the best short account on the island. Displays cover the trade, the plantations, the lives of enslaved people and daily life in the settlement. Entry is a small fee, about US$3–8 (2026 estimate, check), and opening days are limited, likely weekdays. Phone the day before or ask your host. It is also the best rainy-day plan on the island.
A few nearby ruins, including the church walls, can be added if you have time. All are protected: stay on paths and do not climb walls.
Lunch is the practical problem. The Upper Town has a few small kitchens, and they cook to order. Book the day before for a table around 12:30, and carry cash. If you would rather picnic, small shops sell bread, fruit and cheese, and the fort or the museum garden makes a fair place to sit. The afternoon heat is the reason to leave the Upper Town by early afternoon: go back to your guesthouse, or down to the bay by taxi.
- Time needed

4The Quill and the Wild Side2 min
The southern half of the island is one mountain. The Quill is a dormant volcano about 600 metres high, and its crater holds a rainforest: tall trees, ferns, vines and shade in a bowl where the air stays cool and damp. The hike into and around the crater is the best day out on the island and the reason many people come. It is also the one thing here that needs real preparation.
Plan about three hours for the standard route to the crater and back, and up to four or more if you walk the full circuit and stop for photographs (2026 desk estimates). Start at first light. It is cooler on the steps, and cloud often covers the crater by late morning. The trail is muddy after rain and the roots and stones are slippery, so wear shoes with grip, not sandals, and carry at least a litre and a half of water. A trail or park fee may apply; confirm with your host or the parks office and carry small US cash. If you have not hiked in the tropics before, a local guide is a good idea, for route knowledge and for safety.
December to April is the dry and cooler season and the best time to go. From June to November, hurricane season, trails can close after storms and the mud is worse. Tell your host your start time and your expected return, because phone signal drops inside the crater. Do not go alone in wet weather, and turn back if the path is running with water.
The north and east coasts are wild. Zeelandia Beach is a long Atlantic beach with strong currents and rough surf; it is a place to look, not to swim, and it is often empty. There are no shops, toilets or shade huts, so bring water. Sea turtles nest on Statia beaches in the warmer months, roughly April to November (check); stay away from nests and keep lights off at night. Ask about guided turtle walks rather than searching yourself.
Both of these need a car or a taxi. A hired car costs about US$45–75 a day (2026 estimate) and is the easiest way to combine The Quill, Zeelandia and the shore in one day or two. Roads are narrow, some are unlit, and goats and dogs use them, so do not drive after dark unless you know the road. If you would rather not drive, agree a fare and a return pickup with a taxi before you set off.
Pack the night before: water, a snack, a rain layer, a hat and small US cash. Buy water and fruit at a shop in town, since nothing is sold at the trailhead.
- Height
- About 600 m; a dormant volcano with a rainforest in the crater
- Time
- About 3 to 4 hours on the trail (2026 desk estimate)
- Best season
- December to April; trails can close in hurricane season
- Hired car
- About US$45–75 a day (2026 estimate)
5Eating, Paying and Getting Around2 min
Statia is a place where you plan meals. There is no restaurant strip, hours change without notice, and small kitchens cook to order. The basic rule is to phone or ask your host the day before, give a time, and carry cash.
The island's food is Caribbean home cooking. Chicken with rice and peas is the standard plate lunch, fish comes from the local catch and is grilled or fried, and goat stew is the local favourite; ask ahead for it. Johnny cakes, a fried or baked bread, come with breakfast or with fish. Fruit, in season, is mango, papaya and citrus. A plate lunch is about US$10–18, dinner at a bay restaurant about US$18–32 and a set dinner at a guesthouse about US$30–50 (2026 estimates). The cheapest meal is a picnic of bread, fruit and cheese at about US$5–12.
Money is simple in one way and awkward in another. The currency is the US dollar, so there is no exchange. But cards work in some places only, and cash machines are few and can be empty. Bring cash in small notes, and count your budget in cash. Most goods are imported, so expect prices above those in the US mainland.
Getting around is by walking inside each area and by car between them. There is no bus or rail. Taxis are few and irregular after dark; ask your host to book, agree the fare and arrange the return before you go out. A hired car is about US$45–75 a day and a scooter about US$30–50 (2026 estimates, check); the roads are narrow and rough, so check insurance and helmets. Drive on the right and expect goats and dogs.
The island has a small airport (EUX) served by small planes, usually from St Maarten, and flights are few. A missed connection can cost a day, so do not plan a tight onward booking. For hurricane season, June to November with a peak from August to October, buy flexible travel and expect flights and ports to close for days.
Health and safety are ordinary for the region. Sun and humidity are the main risks, so carry water, wear a hat and start hikes early. Ask your host whether the tap water is drinkable. The island is quiet and safe for visitors in daylight, but paths and roads are dark at night, and a torch and a pre-booked taxi are sensible.
- Currency
- US dollar; cards patchy, cash machines few
- Plate lunch
- About US$10–18 (2026 estimate)
- Hired car
- About US$45–75 a day (2026 estimate, check)
- Hurricane season
- June to November, peak August to October
6Planning 2 to 4 Days2 min
With two to four days, the order matters more than the list. The island's sights are few, close and quiet, so the plan is really about weather, the sun and one big morning.
Give The Quill your best morning. Check the forecast the night before, and if the ground is soaked, swap it to another day. Start at first light and be off the trail by early afternoon. Keep the rest of that day empty. Lunch, a nap, and dinner at the bay by taxi is enough.
Use another morning for the Upper Town. Begin at Fort Oranje before the heat, walk to the synagogue ruins, and finish at the museum around mid-morning. Book lunch for about 12:30. If it rains, do the museum first and skip the fort.
Spend an afternoon in the Lower Town. Walk the shore road in late afternoon for the ruins, then have a cold drink at one of the snack stops and stay for dinner. If you dive, book the day before and check weather and visibility with the shop. December to April is best for diving and hiking.
Zeelandia Beach is a half-day look by car. Go in the morning, take water and food, and do not swim. Combine it with a picnic and the drive back through the Upper Town. With only two days, drop the beach and keep The Quill, the fort and the museum.
For a three-day trip, the flow is fort and ruins on day one, The Quill on day two, and the shore on day three, with the airport in the afternoon. Leave a buffer before any flight, and arrange the airport taxi with your host the night before. Guesthouse pickups are the easiest option.
Whatever you plan, confirm hours by phone the day before, carry cash, and treat every opening time here as a guess until someone local tells you otherwise. That is not a flaw: it is how a small island works, and it is part of the trip.
- 2 days
- The Quill at first light; fort, synagogue ruins and museum
- 3 days
- Add the Lower Town shore and a dive or snorkel
- 4 days
- Add Zeelandia and a slow day
- Confirm
- Every opening time, the day before
