Miramichi is a spread-out town of about 18,000 in northern New Brunswick, formed from Newcastle and Chatham, whose two centres sit 13 km apart on opposite banks of the river. It calls itself Canada's Irish Capital and its best days are on the water: tubing, boat tours, salmon fishing. Sights are few and scattered, so a car matters more here than a long list of stops.

Getting around

Miramichi Transit runs three routes (Newcastle–Northumberland Square, Chatham–Northumberland Square, Newcastle–Chatham via Chatham Head), hourly Monday–Friday 07:00–18:00 and Saturday 09:00–16:00, fare $3 exact change. The two town centres are 13 km apart, so a car is the realistic way to cover the sights, the river and the lodges.

Safety

A small, low-crime town; the real risks are the river (cold, fast current, no lifeguards on most stretches), wildlife on Highway 8 and Highway 11 at dusk, and winter ice on the roads.
  • The two centres are 13 km apart: do not book a Chatham hotel and plan a Newcastle dinner on foot.
  • River tubing, boat tours and Middle Island operate May–August only; outside that window they are closed.
  • Blackflies and mosquitoes are heavy near the water in late spring and early summer: bring repellent.
  • Winter driving on Highway 8 and Highway 11 is snow-and-ice country; check road conditions before a night run.
