Saint Petersburg is Russia's second city and its former imperial capital, built on Neva delta islands from 1703 and largely intact since. The historic centre and its suburban palaces are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Hermitage alone can take a full day, and the palaces at Peterhof and Pushkin sit 30–50 km out of town. Plan around the seasons: June brings White Nights and peak crowds, November to March brings snow, short days and near-empty museums.

Getting around

The metro is the fastest way across the centre; tokens and cards are bought at station kiosks. Buses and trolleybuses fill the gaps. Bridges over the Neva are drawn up for ships for several hours each night from late April to November, so check the schedule before a late crossing. Taxis are cheap by Western standards; use an app and agree the price.

Watch out

Safety

Central Saint Petersburg is busy and generally safe by day; the real risks are app-taxi touts at the airport, pickpockets on Nevsky Prospekt and the metro, and winter ice. Check your government's travel advice before booking.
  • Do not accept a taxi from a tout at Pulkovo: book in the app or at the desk, or agree the price first.
  • Bridges are raised at night from late April to November; a taxi across the Neva after midnight can be long.
  • Winter ice on pavements and falling icicles: wear boots with grip and keep clear of building edges.
  • Check your government's travel advice and visa rules before booking; entry rules change.
