Simpelveld is a village of about 10,700 people in South Limburg, 30–45 minutes by bus from Heerlen and close to the A76/A79. It is known for the Miljoenenlijn steam train, which starts here, and for the Loreto monastery museum. The centre is walkable in 15 minutes; the surrounding loess hills are for walking and cycling. Most travellers use it as a quiet, cheaper base for the region rather than as a sightseeing destination in itself.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk. For the outskirts, nearby villages and the hill routes, rent a bike at the Natuurtransferium on Kruinweg or use a car. Buses 20, 21 and 26 link Heerlen and Kerkrade to Simpelveld in about 30–45 min; bus 350 plus a change in Gulpen connects Maastricht in about 1 h. The village rail station is used only by the tourist steam train.

Safety

Simpelveld is a quiet, low-crime village; the real risks are unlit country lanes at night, fast cyclists on the hill paths and a thin bus timetable after dark.
  • The regular railway does not serve Simpelveld: reach it by bus or car, or on the steam train from Kerkrade or Valkenburg.
  • Many restaurants close on Mondays and after about 21:30; eat earlier or self-cater.
  • Steam-train services run on selected days only: check the operator's timetable before you plan around it.
  • Village shops shut on Sunday evenings; the supermarket on Kloosterplein keeps longer hours.
  • Hilly, narrow lanes and cycle paths: watch for bikes and farm traffic.
