  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Panama City Beach is a 20 km strip of white-sand Gulf shoreline on Florida's Emerald Coast, built for driving: high-rise condos and hotels along Front Beach Road, state parks at both ends, and a spring-break reputation that shapes March and April. It is a beach-and-condo town, not a sightseeing city — you come for the water, the seafood and the easy family logistics. Three to four nights covers it; a car is close to essential.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: Front Beach Road runs the length of the strip and US 98 (Back Beach Road) is the fast east–west route behind it. The Bay Town Trolley covers parts of the beach (Routes 7 and 8) at about $1 a ride, but waits can be long — treat it as a fallback, not a plan. Scooters and golf carts are rented along Front Beach Road; check insurance and helmet rules before you sign.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Panama City, Florida

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Drive US 98 across St. Andrews Bay, about 20–30 min

Historic downtown, marina and the science museum; a half-day if the beach is rained out.

Destin

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Drive west on US 98, about 1 h

Outlet shopping, harbour and calmer, clearer water; go early to beat summer traffic.

Fort Walton Beach

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Drive west on US 98 past Destin, about 1 h 15 min

Quieter beaches and the air-force museum; pairs well with a Destin stop.

Santa Rosa Beach

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Drive west on US 98, about 45 min

Scenic 30A towns, coastal dune lakes and quieter sand.

Freeport, Florida

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Drive west on US 98 then north on SR 331, about 1 h

Small town with boat launches; only worth it if you are already heading west.

DeFuniak Springs

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Drive north on US 331, about 1 h 15 min

Inland historic town and lake; a rain-day option, not a beach day.

Niceville

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Drive west on US 98, about 1 h 30 min

Base for the north end of the coast; long for a day return.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Front Beach Road (west end)

High-rise condos and resorts, widest choice of pools and beachfront units; 10–20 min drive to restaurants.

Middle Beach Road

Quieter mid-strip, mix of motels and condos, walkable to a few bars and cafés.

Thomas Drive / Grand Lagoon

East end near St. Andrews State Park; marina restaurants, boat trips, calmer water at the jetties.

Off-beach alternative: Panama City (across St. Andrews Bay)

A separate city, 20–30 min drive to the sand; cheaper rooms and more business hotels, but no beach at the door.

Watch out

Safety

The main risks are water and weather, not crime: rip currents kill more people here than anything else, and hurricane season runs June–November. Lock your car, keep valuables out of sight on the sand, and stay off the road after drinking — Bay County runs DUI checks.
  • Spring break (March–April) brings very large college crowds, noise rules and some beach and balcony restrictions — check the city's rules for your dates.
  • Rip currents are the main real danger: swim near lifeguards, and never swim alone or after dark.
  • Hurricane season runs June–November, peaking Aug–Oct; buy travel insurance or book flexible rates.
  • Front Beach Road traffic crawls at sunset and on summer weekends — add 20–30 min to any drive.
  • Some older motels and condo towers are dated; read recent photos before booking.
