Rustaviრუსთავი
Skip as a base: Rustavi is a half-day Soviet-industrial side trip from Tbilisi, 25–40 min by marshrutka for ₾2.50.
Rustavi is Georgia's steel town, 25 km southeast of Tbilisi and 25–40 minutes by marshrutka. It is not a sightseeing city: the draw is the Soviet planned layout, the crumbling nine-storey blocks, the working steel mill, the car market and the red hills east of town. Most travellers see it as a half-day or an afternoon from Tbilisi, not as a place to sleep. If you want industrial and post-Soviet Georgia without a tour bus, this is it; if you want old churches and wine, go elsewhere.

- Caucasus ↗The Armenia–Azerbaijan and Armenia–Türkiye land borders are closed; any route that crosses them is not a route, however short it looks.
- Caucasus ↗Georgia treats entry to Abkhazia or South Ossetia from Russia as illegal; entering that way can mean arrest or a ban when you next reach Georgia proper.
- Georgia ↗Many passports enter visa-free for a long stay; if yours needs a visa, apply only on the official e-visa portal.
- Georgia ↗Do not plan travel to Abkhazia or South Ossetia: crossing their boundary lines from Georgian-controlled land is treated as illegal entry, and many governments advise against it.
- Georgia ↗In Orthodox churches women cover their heads and shoulders and wear a skirt or a wrap; men remove hats and avoid shorts.
- Georgia ↗Carry Georgian lari in small notes for minibuses, markets and the metro card; cards work in most Tbilisi cafés and shops but not everywhere outside the capital.

Getting around
Rustavi is walkable along Megobroba Street and Kostava Avenue. Marshrutkas cover the city at a flat 50 tetri; the #1 and #14 link New and Old Rustavi. Check the windshield sign: 'pirdapir' (პირდაპირ) means direct, otherwise you get the long route. Taxis are cheap but unmetered, so agree the fare first.
