Rustavi
რუსთავი
Skip as a base: Rustavi is a half-day Soviet-industrial side trip from Tbilisi, 25–40 min by marshrutka for ₾2.50.
Rustavi is Georgia's steel town, 25 km southeast of Tbilisi and 25–40 minutes by marshrutka. It is not a sightseeing city: the draw is the Soviet planned layout, the crumbling nine-storey blocks, the working steel mill, the car market and the red hills east of town. Most travellers see it as a half-day or an afternoon from Tbilisi, not as a place to sleep. If you want industrial and post-Soviet Georgia without a tour bus, this is it; if you want old churches and wine, go elsewhere.

Get around
Rustavi is walkable along Megobroba Street and Kostava Avenue. Marshrutkas cover the city at a flat 50 tetri; the #1 and #14 link New and Old Rustavi. Check the windshield sign: 'pirdapir' (პირდაპირ) means direct, otherwise you get the long route. Taxis are cheap but unmetered, so agree the fare first.

- The Tbilisi–Baku night train that stopped in Rustavi is suspended; do not plan around it.
- Industrial areas and the steel mill are working sites: do not walk in without an arranged tour.
- Some hotel listings are old; call or check a booking site before turning up.
- Taxis have no meters: agree the price before you get in.
Rustavi is a normal working city and feels safe by day; the real issues are unlit streets after dark, unmetered taxis and dust and heat in summer. Standard precautions apply.
