Casino is a rural service town on the Richmond River, inland from Ballina and Lismore, and calls itself Australia's beef capital. It is a NSW TrainLink junction where the Sydney and Brisbane trains meet coach services for the Northern Rivers and the Gold Coast, and the interchange is short. Outside Beef Week there is little for a visitor beyond a riverside park, a small mini railway and a lot of steak. Despite the name, there is no casino here.

Getting around

The town is a grid of square blocks, but the railway line and the Richmond River cut several streets into non-contiguous parts, so North Street runs roughly east–west and West Street roughly north–south. Only Centre Street crosses the river. Local buses are limited and mostly serve residents; a car or a taxi is the practical way to reach the motels on the highway edges. Walking works inside the CBD.

Watch out

Safety

Daytime in the CBD is generally fine. After dark, avoid walking alone anywhere in town, keep to lit main streets and drive rather than walk between the station and your motel.
  • The rail-to-coach interchange at Casino station is short: do not leave the station to explore or you risk missing the connection.
  • North Street and West Street do not run in the directions their names suggest, and both are split by the railway line or the river.
  • The Summerland Way carries heavy truck traffic and wildlife after dark; avoid driving it at night if you can.
  • When the Pacific Highway closes for crashes, flooding or fire, the Summerland Way and Bruxner Highway become the signed detour and run at capacity.
  • Street crime happens after dark in parts of town; do not walk alone at night.
  • The town has no casino, despite the name.
