Glenelg is a small village on the Wester Ross coast, reached only by a narrow lane off the A87 at Shiel Bridge. It was a historic crossing point to Skye, and the summer-only turntable ferry to Kylerhea still runs. Two Iron Age brochs, a ruined barracks and a handful of places to eat and sleep are the whole visit. Come for one night, or skip it if you are on a tight Skye schedule.

Getting around

On foot for the village, barracks and ferry jetty. The brochs are about 2 miles south up a lane, so a car or bike helps. There is no onward transport from Kylerhea on the Skye side.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are the single-track road, midges in summer and no mobile signal in places. Tell someone your route if you are walking the glen.
  • The only road in is a narrow single-track lane from Shiel Bridge; allow extra time and expect passing places.
  • Bernera Barracks are unsafe and fenced: look from the road, do not enter.
  • Mobile signal is patchy: EE has 4G, other networks often nothing, and there are dead spots on the approach road.
  • The Glenelg Inn opens only Thursday–Sunday from November to March.
