ArmaghArd Mhacha

Give Armagh one full day and one night: two cathedrals and the Robinson Library on foot, Navan Fort by taxi or car; skip it as a base without a car.

Armagh is a small cathedral city of about 16,400 people, an hour by bus from Belfast and close to the Republic's border. Both St Patrick's cathedrals sit on neighbouring hills, the 1771 Robinson Library holds Swift's own corrected Gulliver, and Navan Fort is two miles west. It works as a day trip from Belfast or a single overnight, not as a touring base unless you drive.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk: bus station to either cathedral is under 15 minutes. Ulsterbus 73 passes Navan Fort on the Killylea Road but runs a sparse service, so take a taxi (about 5 minutes) or drive. National Cycleway 91 and Route 95 pass through on-road. Taxis: Callan, Eurocabs and Diamond (numbers in the pocket card).

Quieter, a few minutes' walk south of the centre; the larger hotel and leisure centre are here.

Outskirts and hills (Monaghan Road, Milford)

B&Bs and a campsite a mile to four miles out; only worth it with a car or a booked taxi.

Safety

Standard UK advice applies: 999 or 112 for emergencies, 101 for non-urgent police, 111 for NHS advice. Expect rain and uneven ground at the cathedrals and Navan Fort; if you walk back from the fort after dark, use a lit route or a taxi.
  • Sights keep short winter hours and some close on Mondays or at lunchtime: check each site before you travel.
  • The Roman Catholic cathedral's guided tours must be booked about two weeks ahead.
  • The Robinson Library's collections need a prior appointment; the reading room hours are limited to weekday mornings and afternoons.
  • 12 July Orange Order parades close roads and fill the town; check the Parades Commission listing for smaller events.
  • Near the border your phone may latch onto an Irish network and incur roaming charges: switch off data roaming.
