Leipzig is Saxony's biggest city and the hinge of 1989: the Monday demonstrations at the Nikolaikirche started here and helped bring down the East German regime. Today it is a trade-fair and university city with a compact centre, a tram network that reaches everywhere, and a young creative scene in the Südvorstadt and Plagwitz. Two nights covers the core; add a third for the lake district or a day trip to Dresden.

Trams (LVB) are the main way around; most lines run every 10 min by day and at least hourly at night. A single ticket is €3.60 and a day ticket €10.20 (valid until 04:00). The S-Bahn crosses the centre north–south through the city tunnel. Buy tickets from machines, the LeipzigMOVE app, or the driver after 20:00.
