Leipzig is Saxony's biggest city and the hinge of 1989: the Monday demonstrations at the Nikolaikirche started here and helped bring down the East German regime. Today it is a trade-fair and university city with a compact centre, a tram network that reaches everywhere, and a young creative scene in the Südvorstadt and Plagwitz. Two nights covers the core; add a third for the lake district or a day trip to Dresden.

Leipzig is generally safe for visitors; the main risks are pickpockets around Hauptbahnhof and the Markt, and rowdy nights around the Karli. Trams run late but the last regular services are around midnight.
