Tenterfield is a small New England town of about 4,000 people on the New England Highway, 92 km north of Glen Innes and 148 km south of Stanthorpe. It is known for the Tenterfield Saddler and the 1889 Sir Henry Parkes federation speech. You need a car: there is no local bus and no car rental in town. Most travellers pass through in a few hours; one night covers the town sights, and a second night lets you add Bald Rock or Boonoo Boonoo.

Getting around

Private transport is best. There is a local taxi service but no local bus service, and no car rental agencies in Tenterfield. The town centre is walkable in 10–15 minutes; everything else (Bald Rock, Boonoo Boonoo, Mount Mackenzie, Girraween) needs a car.

Watch out

Safety

Tenterfield is a small, quiet country town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are driving: kangaroos and stock on the highway at dawn and dusk, long unlit stretches, and no fuel or phone signal on the back roads.
  • No car rental in town: arrange a vehicle in Armidale, Glen Innes or Brisbane before you arrive.
  • The Armidale coach is a booked service with one run each way a day; book ahead.
  • Brisbane–Tenterfield coaches run only on Mondays and Fridays and can be adjusted or cancelled at short notice; confirm before travel.
  • National park day-use fees apply at Bald Rock and Boonoo Boonoo ($8 (≈ US$6) per vehicle per day); camping needs a booking.
  • Boonoo Boonoo: do not follow mapping-app driving directions to the falls; use the signed route.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy on the back roads; carry water and fuel.
