• The 2023 earthquake is still visible: the New Mosque was demolished and its square cordoned off, the Malatya Museum is closed, Taşhoron Church has not reopened. Check before you walk to any of them.
• Aslantepe was closed for renovation in 2025; the best finds are in Ankara's Museum of Anatolian Civilisations, replicas stay on site.
• The railway station was wrecked in 2023 and has almost no facilities; buy food and water before you arrive.
• The bus terminal is makeshift after earthquake damage: allow extra time and confirm your platform.
• Winters are cold and snowy at 954 m; Mount Nemrut's access road is snowbound outside summer.
• Carry lira in small notes: smaller places may not take cards.
