Malatya
Give Malatya one night as a break on the D-300 between Kayseri and Elazığ, or skip it: the 2023 earthquake still closes the main sights.
Malatya is the largest city of central-eastern Anatolia, at 954 m where the steppe meets the eastern mountains. It is an apricot and textile town with few sights for its size, and the February 2023 earthquake damaged or closed most of what there was: the New Mosque is demolished, the Malatya Museum is shut, Taşhoron Church has not reopened. Come for a bed, a meal and a hamam on the way to Mount Nemrut, Elazığ or Van, not as a destination.

- Aslantepe was closed for renovation in 2025; the best finds are in Ankara's Museum of Anatolian Civilisations, replicas stay on site.
- The railway station was wrecked in 2023 and has almost no facilities; buy food and water before you arrive.
- The bus terminal is makeshift after earthquake damage: allow extra time and confirm your platform.
- Winters are cold and snowy at 954 m; Mount Nemrut's access road is snowbound outside summer.
- Carry lira in small notes: smaller places may not take cards.
Malatya is a normal, low-crime Anatolian city; the real issues are earthquake damage, winter snow and long road transfers. Use 112 for everything, and check the official site before walking to any sight listed as closed.
