Divriği is an iron-mining town of about 11,000 people in the mountains of north-central Anatolia, and its one unmissable sight is the Great Mosque and Hospital, a UNESCO site from 1229 with stone portals carved figure by figure into the walls. Everything else — tombs, a ruined citadel, a view terrace, a stone bridge — fits around that. The town is quiet, the old centre is intact, and most travellers see it on the Doğu Express or on a Sivas–Erzincan regional train.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: the Great Mosque, Kamareddin Türbesi, Nurettin Salih Türbesi, Sitte Melik Türbesi, the hammam and the bazaar are all within a few minutes of each other. The citadel and Kesdoğan are a short climb; Seyir Terası is on the ridge above town. Kız Köprüsü is 4 km north — visible from the train as it slows into town, otherwise take a taxi. No useful local bus network.

Watch out

Safety

Divriği is a small, quiet town and feels safe; the real risks are winter roads, patchy phone signal and getting stranded when the dolmuş doesn't fill.
  • Mobile data is patchy: 4G from Türk Telekom and Vodafone only, nothing from Turkcell, and nothing on the approach highways (check current coverage).
  • The citadel has been under restoration and rebuilding: parts may be closed or fenced, but entry has been possible.
  • The Sivas dolmuş services have no fixed timetable — they leave when full, so build in slack.
  • Winter brings snow and road closures on the D260/D850; check conditions before driving.
  • Carry cash: small businesses may not take cards, and there is no big supermarket.
