- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
Atlanta is the capital of Georgia and the hub of the US South, with three separate skylines (Downtown, Midtown, Buckhead) and a metro of about 6.3 million people. It is a car-first, spread-out city, but MARTA rail links the airport, Downtown and Midtown, so a short trip without a car works if you stay central. Its strongest draw is civil-rights history, followed by food, film and the 2026 World Cup.

Getting around
MARTA rail covers the airport, Downtown, Midtown and Buckhead; a Breeze card or tap card pays the fare. For anything off the rail lines — most neighbourhoods, restaurants and the BeltLine — use rideshare or a car. Traffic is heavy at rush hour, so allow extra time.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Downtown
Walk to the aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, the capitol and Mercedes-Benz Stadium; MARTA stops at Peachtree Center and GWCC; quiet at night.
Midtown
Best all-round base: Piedmont Park, the arts centre, restaurants and bars, 2–3 MARTA stops from Downtown; walkable streets.
Buckhead
Upscale hotels, shopping and nightlife, several km north of Midtown; MARTA rail plus rideshare; 20–30 min to the stadium by car.
Old Fourth Ward / Inman Park (East)
Restaurants, the BeltLine and Krog Street; limited hotels, so most visitors stay central and come here to eat.
