  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

College Park is a small city (about 15,000 people) that shares its boundary with Hartsfield-Jackson, the world's busiest airport. Its draw is practical: airport hotels, the Georgia International Convention Center and Gateway Center Arena, plus a 606-acre historic district of Queen Anne and Craftsman houses along Main Street. Sightseeing is thin — one night, or a half-day between flights, covers it.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

MARTA Gold and Red lines stop at College Park and Airport stations, linking the city to downtown Atlanta in about 15–20 min. The ATL SkyTrain connects the terminals, the rental-car center and the Gateway Center Arena area. Local buses and hotel shuttles cover the hotel strip; a car or rideshare is easier for Main Street and the golf course.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Half-day for the walk-up trail and the park; check the attraction schedule.

Door to door: About 50–60 min

MARTA Red line north from College Park

Mostly a business and dining district; go for a specific stop.

Door to door: About 50–60 min

Car via I-20 west

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Airport and Convention Center corridor

Best Road, Old National Highway and Convention Center Concourse: chain hotels with free airport shuttles, walkable to Gateway Center Arena.

Historic Main Street

Small inns and short-term rentals near the restaurants; quieter, but you need a car or rideshare for the airport.

Downtown Atlanta (alternative)

About 15–20 min by MARTA from the Airport station; more to do, higher rates on event nights.

Watch out

Safety

Daytime is fine around the hotels, MARTA stations and Main Street. At night, use rideshare or hotel shuttles rather than walking the highway strips, and keep valuables out of sight in parked cars.
  • Aircraft noise is real near the airport: ask for a room away from the runways.
  • Some blocks around Old National Highway are quiet at night; stick to lit hotel grounds and use rideshare after dark.
  • Summer heat and thunderstorms: plan indoor stops midday in Jul–Aug.
  • Hotel 'airport shuttle' hours vary — confirm the last pickup before you book.
