  • China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Huaibei is a coal city in northern Anhui, at the junction of Anhui, Shandong, Jiangsu and Henan, that has turned to ecology and heritage tourism. Its draws are Grand Canal archaeology, a Neolithic site, Han tombs and a mountain road, all spread out and mostly unpolished. It rewards travellers already in the Huai River corridor, not a dedicated trip.

Safety

Huaibei is a low-crime city; the real risks are rural roads after heavy rain, unlit heritage sites and language barriers at bus stops. Keep the tourist hotline saved.
  • Most heritage sites are provincial or national protection units, not staffed attractions: check opening arrangements locally before travelling out.
  • Some ancestral halls and village sites are privately held or used for worship; ask before entering.
  • Summer rain is concentrated in July–August, with flooding possible on rural roads.
  • Bus and site information is mostly in Chinese only.
