Dingwall is a small Highland town at the head of the Cromarty Firth, 35 minutes by train or bus from Inverness. Its 19th-century centre, a museum, two churches and a castle site fill an afternoon; the real draw is the rail junction for Tain, Thurso, Wick and Kyle of Lochalsh, plus Tulloch Castle and the Tollie red kite reserve nearby. Most travellers use it as a stop, not a destination.

Getting around

The centre is walkable in about 20 minutes end to end. Trains run roughly hourly to Inverness (35 min) and continue north to Tain, Thurso and Wick or west to Kyle of Lochalsh. Stagecoach buses 25A/27 run hourly Mon–Sat from Inverness and on to Strathpeffer. You need your own wheels for the Tollie red kite reserve and most surrounding sights.

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are winter ice on pavements and side roads, short daylight, and walking the canal path when the firing range is active.
  • Dingwall station has no ticket machines: buy on board if the office is shut (Mon–Sat 07:30–14:30).
  • Sunday trains from Inverness are every 2–3 hours and mostly stop at Tain.
  • The Tollie red kite reserve has been closed for bird flu: check before travelling.
  • The canal walk passes a firing range: do not walk it when red flags are flying.
  • Winter daylight is short and side roads can be icy; drive to conditions.
