Nykøbing Falster is the main town on Falster, about 20,000 people, on the rail line between Copenhagen and the Gedser–Rostock ferry. The old centre is small and walkable; the real draw is the Medieval Center 4 km away and the beaches at Marielyst. Most travellers use it as one night, not a destination in itself.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Local buses (Movia routes 39 and 43) run to Gedser several times a day; the private Lolland line goes west to Nakskov. For the Medieval Center, Marielyst and Borre Bog a car or bike is easiest: the centre is 4 km from the Medieval Center and 12 km from the beach. Check current local bus and train options before you rely on them.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for tourists; the practical risks are thin evening bus service, seasonal closures and dark, unlit cycle paths outside town. Lock your bike and use lights after dusk.
  • The Medieval Center and several small museums are seasonal: May–Sep only, with shorter hours in the shoulder weeks. Check before you build a day around them.
  • Weekend buses to Odense and Gedser are much thinner than weekday services; a missed bus can mean hours of waiting.
  • The Gedser–Rostock ferry is a crossing to Germany, not a sightseeing trip: book and check times in advance.
  • Small-town Denmark closes early: many kitchens stop serving by 21:00.
