Crowsnest Pass is a 5,500-person municipality strung along Highway 3 where five coal towns — Bellevue, Hillcrest, Frank, Blairmore and Coleman — were merged in 1979. It is a driving stop between Calgary and the Kootenays, not a resort: the draw is a rockslide that killed 90 people in 1903, underground mine tours, and trailheads straight off the highway. Blairmore and Coleman hold almost all the beds and food.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the towns stretch about 20 km along Highway 3 and buses on the corridor stop at Sparwood and Pincher Creek, not in the pass. Crowsnest Taxi covers short hops. In Blairmore most amenities are within walking distance.

Watch out

Safety

Low street crime; the real risks are wildlife on trails, fast-changing mountain weather and winter driving on Highway 3. Carry bear spray in summer and tell someone your trail plan — cell coverage drops in the valleys.
  • No scheduled bus stops inside the pass; the Highway 3 service stops at Sparwood (about 40 km) and Pincher Creek (about 46 km).
  • Highway 940 north is rough gravel, 4x4 or SUV only.
  • Mine tours and the interpretive centre run seasonal hours: check before you drive out.
  • Winter driving on Highway 3: snow, ice and closed passes are normal from November to March.
