Præstø is a small old merchant town at the head of its own fjord on South Zealand, about 3,900 people. There is no railway: you arrive by bus or car. The draw is a compact main street, Nysø Manor park with Thorvaldsen's studio, Denmark's oldest pottery workshop, and fjord walks. One night is enough; two if you want kayaking or the labyrinth park.

Getting around

The town centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Buses 78 and 79 link Næstved, 63 goes to Vordingborg, 91 to Faxe and 256 onward to Stege on Møn. Services are infrequent: check times before you plan a day.

Safety

Very safe. The real issues are sparse buses, dark unlit roads outside town at night, and cold fjord water: plan the last bus and wear something visible after dusk.
  • No railway station: bus or car only, and buses are sparse.
  • Several sights are summer-only: Nysø interior and Thorvaldsen's Museum open May–Aug.
  • Some listed businesses and links are dated: check opening hours before travelling.
  • Fjord water is shallow and cools fast; swimming is for summer only.
