Give Middelburg one full day and one night: the canal ring, abbey and market square are walkable in 3–4 hours, and Veere or Vlissingen fills the rest.
Middelburg is the capital of Zeeland and one of the Netherlands' densest heritage towns, with over 1,100 listed monuments inside a star-shaped canal ring. It is small, flat and walkable, and it works either as a single stop on the Zeeland line or as a two-night base for Walcheren, Veere and the Delta Works.

Getting around
The centre is compact and flat: walk it, or rent a bike for the canals and the ride out to Veere. Trains on the Zeeuwse line (Vlissingen–Middelburg–Goes–Roosendaal) run roughly twice an hour. Parking in the old centre is limited and paid, so use the signposted garages just outside the ring.
