Pasuruan

Skip Pasuruan town as a base: use it as a 1-night rail stop for Candi Jawi and Taman Safari, or day-trip from Surabaya or Malang.

Pasuruan is a small East Java town on the Surabaya–Malang–Banyuwangi rail line, with a colonial-era core, a 1700s mosque and a snack trade built on rice jipang. The real draws sit outside town: the 13th-century Candi Jawi and the Taman Safari park at Prigen, and the bathing site at Belahan near Gempol. Most travellers pass through on the way to Bromo or Ijen; one night is enough, and only if you want the temples.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk between the station, the mosque and the market. For Candi Jawi, Belahan, Prigen and the safari park you need a car, a rented scooter or a hired driver — public transport does not reach them usefully. Trains link Pasuruan with Surabaya, Malang, Probolinggo and Banyuwangi.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Pasuruan town centre (Gadingrejo / Trajeng)

Walkable to the station, the old mosque and the jipang shops; the practical choice for one night.

Prigen (Taman Safari area)

Cooler, 45–60 min up the mountain; pick this if the safari park or Candi Jawi is the whole point.

Bangil

South of town on the Malang road; food stop rather than a base.

Watch out

Safety

Pasuruan is a normal small Indonesian town and is generally safe for visitors; the real risks are road traffic, scooter rental without a licence, and heavy rain Dec–Apr.
  • Temple and park sites sit 20–40 km (12–25 mi) apart: without your own transport, a day out becomes two taxi fares.
  • Rain is heavy Dec–Apr and paths at Candi Jawi and Belahan get slippery.
  • Bring cash: smaller warungs and souvenir shops may not take cards.
  • Scooter rental without an international permit and helmet is a real risk on the Surabaya–Malang road.
