California City

Give California City half a day on a Route 14 drive: the tortoise reserve and the empty street grid. Sleep in Mojave or Palmdale, not here.

California City is a planned desert city that was never finished: over 200 square miles of paved roads were laid out for a metropolis, and about 14,000 people live along them today. What you come for is the scale of the empty grid, the Desert Tortoise Research Natural Area, and a golf course in the sand. There is almost no visitor infrastructure, so treat it as a stop on a Mojave drive rather than a base.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

You need a car. The inhabited part of town is compact, but the outer street grid runs for miles with no services, no shade and patchy phone signal. Fuel up in Mojave or California City before heading into the empty sections.

Watch out

Safety

Low crime, high heat. The real risks are summer temperatures, unlit unpaved streets on the outer grid, and running out of water or fuel between towns.
  • Summer heat is the main risk: 40 °C (104 °F)+ afternoons, no shade on the grid.
  • The outer streets are unlit and unpaved in places; do not drive them after dark.
  • Cell coverage drops away from the highway; carry water and tell someone your route.
  • Do not touch or move a desert tortoise: it is a protected species and handling is illegal.
