Trujillo is a small Caribbean-coast town in Colón department, roughly 65,000 people in the municipality, sitting where the mountains meet the sea. It has a Spanish fort on the beach, the oldest church square on this coast, the grave of William Walker, and a long grey-sand beach. It is reached by road only: no commercial flights, so most visitors come by car or shuttle from La Ceiba or San Pedro Sula. Two nights covers the town; add a night if you want the national park hike or the cape.

The centre is walkable in 15 minutes. For the cape, the national park trailhead and out-of-town resorts you need a car, a taxi or a hired driver; agree the fare before you get in. Roads in town are paved but rough at the edges, and the coast road west is slow.

Trujillo is a small town and the centre is calm by day, but Honduras has high violent-crime rates: keep to the centre and beach in daylight, take taxis after dark, carry only what you need, and check current local advice before you go.
  • No commercial flights: plan the road transfer and arrive before dark.
  • Drive only in daylight; potholes, livestock and unlit vehicles.
  • Carry lempiras in small notes; card acceptance is limited outside hotels.
  • Swim with care: currents and little lifeguard cover on the town beach.
  • Check the security situation locally before walking outside the centre after dark.
