Rostock is the largest city in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and its Hanseatic port, split between a compact old town on the Warnow river and the seaside district of Warnemünde at the river mouth. It works as a 1–2 night stop on a Baltic coast route, a ferry and cruise gateway, and a day-trip base for Bad Doberan and Wismar. Sights are few but solid; the coast and the water are the reason to come.

Getting around

Trams and buses run under the Verkehrsverbund Warnow (VVW) fare system, which covers Warnemünde too. Single ticket about €3.20 (2026 estimate), day ticket about €8.00, group day ticket about €21.60 for up to 5 people; day tickets run until 03:00. The S-Bahn links Hbf and Warnemünde in about 20 min, and boats also run between the city harbour and Warnemünde. Overnight guests pay a Kurabgabe tourist tax of about €3.70 per day (children 6–14 about €1.45), which includes public transport use — confirm the current rate with your accommodation.

Watch out

Safety

Rostock is a calm, low-risk city by day and night; the real annoyances are pickpockets in the summer crowds at Warnemünde and on trams, and dark, poorly lit stretches of the harbour and KTV after a late night. Standard big-city care is enough.
  • Overnight guests must pay the Kurabgabe tourist tax; it is normally collected by the accommodation.
  • Warnemünde is packed on warm summer weekends and during cruise calls — book beds ahead.
  • Rostock–Laage has almost no commercial flights and no regular bus or train link: do not plan on landing there without a pre-booked transfer.
  • Baltic ferries dock on the east side of the Warnow, well away from the centre; allow time for the bus or taxi link.
  • Many seaside businesses in Warnemünde close or cut hours from November to March.
