Schwerin is the capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the smallest German state capital, about 98,000 people on seven lakes. Its draw is the 19th-century palace on its own island, rebuilt in romantic style and listed by UNESCO in 2024, plus a compact old town you can walk in half a day. Most travellers pass through on the Hamburg–Rostock rail line; one night is enough, two if you want the 61 km lake circuit by bike.

Safety

Schwerin is a calm, low-risk city; the real issues are pickpockets around the station and Markt at night, unlit paths along the lakes after dark, and winter ice on the lakeshore. Standard big-city care is enough.
  • Palace tours run on fixed times and some slots are German-only; check the day's schedule before you go.
  • The cathedral tower closes to climbers about 45 min before the building shuts; 220 steps, no lift.
  • The TV tower is not open to the public: view it from outside only.
  • Sunday shopping is limited; supermarkets and many shops close.
  • Cash is still common in smaller places; carry some euros.
