Schwerin is the capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the smallest German state capital, about 98,000 people on seven lakes. Its draw is the 19th-century palace on its own island, rebuilt in romantic style and listed by UNESCO in 2024, plus a compact old town you can walk in half a day. Most travellers pass through on the Hamburg–Rostock rail line; one night is enough, two if you want the 61 km lake circuit by bike.

Trams (lines 1, 2 and 4) cover most of the city and run daily; buy a single ticket from the driver or a machine, or a day ticket if you make three or more trips.
