Rostock
Give Rostock 1–2 nights: one day for the brick-Gothic old town, one for Warnemünde beach 20 min away by S-Bahn. Skip it as a pure beach base.
Rostock is the largest city in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and its Hanseatic port, split between a compact old town on the Warnow river and the seaside district of Warnemünde at the river mouth. It works as a 1–2 night stop on a Baltic coast route, a ferry and cruise gateway, and a day-trip base for Bad Doberan and Wismar. Sights are few but solid; the coast and the water are the reason to come.

Scams and watch-outs

- Rostock–Laage has almost no commercial flights and no regular bus or train link: do not plan on landing there without a pre-booked transfer.
- Baltic ferries dock on the east side of the Warnow, well away from the centre; allow time for the bus or taxi link.
- Many seaside businesses in Warnemünde close or cut hours from November to March.
Rostock is a calm, low-risk city by day and night; the real annoyances are pickpockets in the summer crowds at Warnemünde and on trams, and dark, poorly lit stretches of the harbour and KTV after a late night. Standard big-city care is enough.
