Tequila is a small town of about 24,000 people in Jalisco, an hour from Guadalajara, built around the blue agave and the drink that took its name. The agave fields and old distilleries here are a UNESCO World Heritage listing. Almost everything worth seeing sits within a 15-minute walk of the plaza, so the trip is short and dense: two distilleries, one museum, one church, one long lunch.

Getting around

On foot. Distilleries, the museum, both churches and the plaza are inside a 15-minute walk. Taxis wait near Sixto Gorjón and Santos Degollado for the waterfall trailhead and outlying hotels; agree the fare first.

Watch out

Safety

Tequila is a small, walkable tourist town and generally calm. The real risks are drink-driving on the valley highway, unlit streets after the bars close, and heat on the waterfall and volcano trails.
  • Distillery tours sell out on weekends and during the fair: book ahead.
  • Tasting pours add up fast at altitude-free but hot midday hours; eat first.
  • The Cascada los Azules hike back is all uphill and takes much longer than the descent.
  • Volcán de Tequila is a serious full-day hike, not a stroll: start early and carry water.
