Puttalam

Skip Puttalam as a base: use it as a transit stop for Wilpattu, Kalpitiya or the Cultural Triangle. Half a day is enough for the lagoon and a meal.

Puttalam is a Muslim-majority industrial and agricultural town 130 km north of Colombo. Tourists pass through on the way to Wilpattu National Park, Kalpitiya's beaches and dolphin-watching, or the Cultural Triangle. The town itself has a large lagoon and a few budget eateries, but no major sights that justify a dedicated stay.

Rules in force · 5
  • South Asia ↗Trekking regions, border districts and several Indian states need separate permits on top of the visa; check the permit before you book transport into them.
  • South Asia ↗Remove shoes (and in many Jain and Hindu temples, leather) before entering; cover shoulders and legs; ask before photographing people or rituals.
  • Sri Lanka ↗Apply for the Electronic Travel Authorisation only on the official government ETA site; lookalike sites charge extra, and the rules and fees change.
  • Sri Lanka ↗At temples cover shoulders and knees, take off shoes and hats, and never pose with your back to a Buddha statue; Buddha images on clothes or tattoos cause offence.
  • Sri Lanka ↗Carry Sri Lankan rupees in small notes; tuk-tuks, buses and small shops are cash-only, and ATMs are fewer outside the cities.

Watch out

Safety

Puttalam is generally safe, but watch for traffic on the A3 and A10 highways. Tuk-tuk drivers may overcharge; agree the fare before the ride.
  • Puttalam is a Muslim-majority town: dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees) and avoid alcohol in public.
  • The Rest House near the bus station is old and basic; check the room before paying.
  • The A3 highway can be congested near Negombo; allow extra time for airport transfers.
