Puttalam
Skip Puttalam as a base: use it as a transit stop for Wilpattu, Kalpitiya or the Cultural Triangle. Half a day is enough for the lagoon and a meal.
Puttalam is a Muslim-majority industrial and agricultural town 130 km north of Colombo. Tourists pass through on the way to Wilpattu National Park, Kalpitiya's beaches and dolphin-watching, or the Cultural Triangle. The town itself has a large lagoon and a few budget eateries, but no major sights that justify a dedicated stay.
